Leadership & Management

Leadership is a word often used to refer to the ability to motivate others to achieve. Through professional experience and education, I have expanded my personal philosophy of leadership to greater understand how to be an effective leader. Effective leadership is not simply the ability to motivate others but the ability to assess, strategize and progress. As a leader, it is my duty to ensure effective use of resources, quality and sincere regard for the labor force. Dedication to working as a public servant has further reinforced my innate desire to provide expertise and work in a reverent manner while acting as a steward of government resources, improving the delivery of government assistance and creating sustainable programs into the future.

Strategy and Policy Development

Strategy and policy development in the government sector requires an in-depth vetting process to ensure constituency is not adversely affected by new policy and procedures. Over the past 10 years, I have extensively researched global healthcare policy, examining current trends and drivers of healthcare evolution. This research has produced evidence to identify deficits in current policies and identify essential objectives in alignment with organizational wide goals.

Office Management

Office management is a professional attribute I possess and have used for over 6 years in the private and public sector. Honing office management skills is a constant practice, which I incorporate daily in my current position as a Project Management Intern for the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing and previously as a Denver City Council Aide. Working for the public requires that I pay special attention to communication, accuracy, and timeliness because one error or oversight can adversely affect the lives of many people in need. As person with a natural affinity to multi-task, acting as an office manager comes naturally. I am able to prioritize and maintain an accurate schedule resulting in a reputation of reliability, ensuring necessary time to produce quality work products, and supporting productivity in a cost-effective manner. My focus on professionalism does not divert attention from offering quality internal and external customer service. Able to interface with a broad spectrum of people, I am adept at effectively communicating critical information irrespective of the audience and situation. Office management often entails outside of the office management such a as public meeting scheduling, document preparation, set-up, and facilitation. To date, I have organized and facilitated over 30 public meetings comprised of 5 – 150 attendees, including the Governor of Colorado, state legislators, and multiple private sector executives.

Financial Management

Budget preparation, revisions, requests, ad consolidation are integral functions I have and continue to perform. I monitor budgets to ensure accurate reporting of revenue and expenses while confirming compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The difficult roll-out of Obamacare has increased financial scrutiny of organizations involved in the dissemination of healthcare benefits. The Colorado Dept. of Health Care Policy & Financing has not been exempt from concentrated inspection. As a Project Management Intern, I have been charged with the duties of resource allocation, vendor contract management, and to validate expenditures for specific projects, such as the implementation of the new Pediatric Assessment Scoring Tool (PAT). I also have over four years of maanaging the vendor selection process, which includes developing requests for proposal (RFP) and requests for information (RFI), reviewing submitted bids from contractors, and serve on vendor selection committees.

Project Management

Since 2008, I have been performing project management duties. Assisting divisional mangers, executive leadership and unit team members on projects including the preparation of scope statements, work break-down structures, timelines, and deliverables are primary functions I complete on a daily basis. In addition to these functions, through collaboration with Executive Leadership, I am responsible for the establishment and implementation of processes and schedules to ensure deadlines are met. Contributions to the formation policy and execution of work plans has resulted in increased proficiency and created a documentation process previously absent from the Denver City Council District 8 office and Colorado Dept. of Health Care Policy & Financing operations prior to my employment. Lastly, I am to be a certified PMP as of February 2014.

Relationship Building

Technology has changed the way human relationships a built and maintained. As a professional, I build and nurture relationships through being, truthful, highly responsive, and consistently reliable resource. Also, it is important to have an authentic interest in the person you are interacting with as people do not want to be used. Small gestures go a long distance when it comes you relationships, whether it be a compliment or remembering a child’s birthday. The quest for professionalism and use of technology should not negate the significance of positive human interaction. Throughout my professional experience I have created and maintained relationships with past and current internal and external customers. A strategy that I have used in all of my positions has included: exuding a positive attitude and offering help outside of my personal job requirements. In addition, I have organized and participated in team building activities that instilled methods to increase synergy and encourage team engagement.

Human Resource Management and Conflict Resolution

Completion of my Master of Science degree provided the terms of art for tactics that used in the past to manage, interns, co-workers, and volunteers. The largest lesson for the curriculum as leader is to also connect compensation and policy in a manner that values human capital. Employees with a strong sense of value positively impact an organizations culture through loyalty and participation in workplace activities and strive for high performance.

Stakeholder Management

Neither the public nor private sector is exempt from responsibility to stakeholders. Stakeholder management is multi-step process that requires continuous monitoring. The process of stakeholder management begins with stakeholder identification, determination of necessity of participation to complete the process (essential vs. non-essential) and level participation resistance.
